Arsenal’s Summer Clearout

As the season ends and the transfer wind creaks opens, reports on player movement’s sky rocket. It seems every player is linked somewhere else regardless of when they signed and the season they’ve had. For Arsenal fans 2015/16 was an ultimately disappointing season. A second place finish is our highest in over a decade but most fans feel we should have won the title as our main rivals faltered. Arsenal v Sunderland Preview

After a poor run that has left us winless in our last three Premier League games, and only pick up one point from two very winnable away fixtures, there’s a sense of gloominess growing over our season. If we were sitting here in the same situation but without the injuries the prospect may be  different. But with the rate at which key players are falling to the wayside it’s difficult to see how we’re going to pull off a big result in Greece midweek, let alone navigate the congested Christmas fixture list.

Francis Coquelin – the emergence of our new midfield general?

The recent emergence of Francis Coquelin in the Arsenal starting line up has put a smile on many Arsenal faces, and it’s easy to see why. He is playing in defensive midfield, a position Arsenal have lacked quality in for some time and since his inclusion results have got better. This is clearly evident when looking at the win ratios of the three players that have occupied the position this season – Arteta, Flamini and Coquelin. The win percentage of each player when they have started in the Premier League is 67%, 38% and 82% respectively, although admittedly the sample size for Arteta is on the smaller side. So what has Coquelin been doing that the others haven’t?
